WHZ View: In-form Ogbonna shines in impressive West Ham win
Angelo Ogbonna was at the heart of an impressive West Ham display away at Goodison Park on Friday night.
The game as a whole was not one that will live long in the memories of any supporter, but the performance of the Italian defender was.
Ogbonna has been enjoying a great run of form lately and that continued against Everton on Friday night.
The Italian was given a very respectable 7.4 match rating by WhoScored – a figure only bettered by Declan Rice and match-winner Tomas Soucek.
With the Hammers once again lining up in a back four, Ogbonna thrived and according to Wyscout, completed 100 per cent of his defensive duels against Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
He also made an impressive seven interceptions, three clearances and did not give away a single foul.
Meanwhile, WhoScored add that he completed 100 per cent of his tackles as well.
Ogbonna has been a key figure for the Hammers this season and he ranks among some of the best in the Premier League.
He has made the second-highest number of interceptions (112) out of any defender in the Premier League this season, as per Wyscout.
West Ham could have easily been up against at Goodison, against one of the league’s most potent strikers in Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
However, the latter seriously struggled to find any sort of rhythm up against a resilient West Ham defence.
The Hammers did so well to restrict Calvert-Lewin, no Everton player touched the ball fewer times than the striker on Friday night.
Following the decision to return to a back four, it is now two clean sheets in a row for David Moyes, a feat that they have not managed since the start of November.
After seeing the performances of Ogbonna and Craig Dawson, the Scot will certainly be tempted to stick with the back four going forward with the Hammers only three points behind Everton.
