West Ham’s transfer logic to be questioned after £48m developments

West Ham’s approach to January business has been interesting to say the least.

West Ham are at serious risk of relegation this season, and the fact that they have already brought in two new players just five days into the window showcases that they are well aware of that.

Pablo arrived from Gil Vicente, while West Ham announced the arrival of Taty Castellanos after a deal was agreed for his transfer from Lazio.

They are both signings that can improve the Hammers in an attacking sense, though that is exactly what will baffle many.

West Ham are blind to their biggest concern

While a deal for Adama Traore seems to have stalled, he was the third player linked with a move to the London Stadium within the first few days of the window.

A third attacker, to be precise.

They are deals that make sense when you consider the lack of threat the Irons have often posed in games, but what doesn’t make sense is the fact that they are yet to address the biggest concern of them all – their defence.

West Ham have the worst defensive record in the Premier League with 41 goals conceded from 20 games, which is one more than Wolves, who secured their first win of the season against the Hammers last time out.

For West Ham to have already spent just short of £48million on two strikers (£21.8m for Pablo, £26.1m for Castellanos) despite that record, it is certainly something that will raise a few concerns.

Have West Ham been linked with defensive arrivals?

To put it straight, yes, and given the form of Max Kilman in particular, they absolutely have to act on it.

Charlie Cresswell has emerged as a target for West Ham, having been loosely linked with a move in the summer transfer window.

The 23-year-old has been a regular for Toulouse again this season, having scored three goals and registered an assist in 17 Ligue 1 appearances.

Axel Disasi has also been mooted for a move to the London Stadium, having completely fallen out of favour at Chelsea, though the departure of Enzo Marseca could impact any potential deal.
