West Ham United must hand Tomas Soucek new contract as stunning run continues, David Moyes has no choice

West Ham were once again let off the hook by midfield ace Tomas Soucek in their Europa League clash with Backa Topola.

The Czech Republic netted a very late winner away from home as the Hammers won the game 1-0 on Thursday (30 November).

It looked for all the world that the East London club would leave Serbia with a mere point in their fifth match of the competition this season.

But midfield star Soucek had other ideas as he volleyed home a perfect Maxwel Cornet cross in the 89th minute of the clash.

That was the 28-year-old’s third successive goal for the Hammers, and remarkably his third successive winner, having scored the decisive goals in the wins against Nottingham Forest and Burnley earlier this month.

But his scoring feats have not been limited to club football, with Soucek netting for the Czech Republic in both of their games in the recent international break.

Having scored against both Poland and Moldova earlier in November, the midfielder now has five goals in his last five games for club and country.

Worryingly for the Hammers, though, is that the player’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, as per Transfermarkt.

West Ham manager David Moyes must now be doing all he can to extend Soucek’s deal at the London Stadium, particularly with the January transfer window rapidly approaching.

Given both his scoring situation and his contract situation, there will no doubt be plenty of suitors for the 28-year-old next summer or indeed in January.

He has really stepped up for the Hammers in recent weeks, much to the delight of his teammates, his manager and all fans of the club.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers want to sign a Ukraine sensation in 2024, with an exit for the player “widely expected.”
