West Ham United must compete with ‘top clubs’ in transfer pursuit of Johan Bakayoko

West Ham will have to compete with top clubs if they want to sign PSV winger Johan Bakayoko after being linked with him in the summer after Fabrizio Romano shared continued interest.

The reliable journalist shared via his Twitter account on 25 October that, following his first Champions League goal, top clubs are monitoring the progress of the tricky Belgian winger.

The Hammers were linked with a move for Bakayoko in the summer transfer window [Sacha Tavolieri, 10 August], and will now have to compete with these top clubs if they want to make the move happen.

The report from Romano also shared a quote from Bakayoko, claiming that no matter the money involved in the deal, he wishes to remain playing for PSV in the Champions League after his flying start to this season’s European campaign for the Dutch side.

However, if PSV get knocked out of Europe in the early stages, as they currently sit bottom of their group with two points from three games, the potential could be there for one of these clubs to step up with a move.

The winger turned down a move to Brentford in the summer, as Romano shares, despite a fee being agreed between the clubs, but West Ham would be able to offer him European football as well as the allure of the Premier League if they retain their interest.

The arrival of Mohammed Kudus in the transfer window, and his subsequent struggles to get into the first team due to the form of Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta suggests the Hammers no longer have a need for Bakayoko, but if a deal can be done, they would not want to miss out on one of Europe’s brightest talents.

In other West Ham news, Michail Antonio shared what it would take for Liverpool to sign Jarrod Bowen.
