West Ham United handed mixed news in Santiago Gimenez pursuit as Florian Plettenberg drops £30m update

Even with Michail Antonio enjoying a strong start to the new season, West Ham could really do with another striker.

David Moyes lost Gianluca Scamacca in the summer transfer window, while Danny Ings has failed to deliver in claret and blue.

One forward that was recently targeted but ultimately failed to arrive at the London Stadium was Feyenoord ace Santiago Gimenez, with Aaron Dominguez (15 August) reporting that the Hammers were in negotiations to sign the player.

The Offsider journalist noted that the Hammers were keen to bring the 22-year-old to East London, but the summer window has been and gone, and the striker has remained with the Eredivisie outfit.

But he may not be there for much longer, with Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg reporting via his personal Twitter account (2 October) that Eintracht Frankfurt are “very interested” in his signature in the January transfer window.

However, Plettenberg added that the Bundesliga club cannot afford to pay his €35million (£30million) price tag at this moment in time.

That fee should not represent a stumbling block for the Hammers should they wish to reignite their interest in the Mexico international this winter.

And they would be foolish not to, with Gimenez banging in 10 goals from his first seven league matches this season, including a hat-trick against fierce rivals Ajax.

Even with the signatures of James Ward-Prowse, Edson Alvarez, Mohammed Kudus and Konstantinos Mavropanos, West Ham may just have some money left in the bank following the mega £105million sale of Declan Rice to Arsenal.

In other West Ham news, a Sky Sports journalist has mooted an international call-up for one “sensational” Hammers player.
