West Ham United could pay the price over David Moyes stance as contract news shared

West Ham reportedly do not intend to offer David Moyes a new contract until he enters the final year of his existing deal.

As reported by Claret & Hugh on Tuesday (17 October), Moyes can forget about discussing fresh terms until Christmas at the earliest.

If United are to truly wait until Moyes enters the final 12 months of his deal, though, it is more likely the club will delay a decision until around spring time.

While it could be argued that is a wise choice, with West Ham chiefs eager to see how this campaign pans out, it can also be seen as a big risk.

Moyes won a European trophy at London Stadium last season and is on course to guide the Hammers into Europe again next season.

The Scotsman failed during his time at Manchester United, but that is not to say another club would not love to have him on board.

Moyes’ former side Everton, for example, may consider making an approach should Sean Dyche not last beyond the 2023-24 campaign.

It is all well and good West Ham want to be certain that the 60-year-old deserves a new deal, but sometimes you do not have that luxury.

There are some United fans who are still not 100% convinced by Moyes, but the past six months surely show he deserves to stay on.

The temptation of twisting rather than sticking may seem enticing, but this is now very much Moyes’ squad at West Ham.

West Ham have seen up close what happens when you get ahead of yourselves, so it makes sense to offer Moyes that new contract now.

That does not mean he necessarily needs to see it out, but it will be a reward for his success in 2023 and will keep things stable at the club.

If the alternative is to wait until June to discuss a new deal, do not be surprised if Moyes himself wonders whether there are options elsewhere.
