West Ham should laugh all the way to the bank amid Maxwel Cornet exit links

It is fair to say it has not quite happened for Maxwel Cornet at West Ham, in fact that is a pretty big understatement.

When Cornet arrived from Burnley in August 2022 for a fee Sky Sports reported to be worth £17.5million it seemed a reasonable piece of business for a player who had done a decent job for the Clarets.

But he just has not made the grade at the London Stadium and has just 15 Premier League appearances to his name, only two of which are as a starter while he has just a solitary appearance off the bench in the league this term.

He does have a League Cup start and four starts in the Europa League, but frankly it is increasingly obvious he is a dispensable member of David Moyes’ squad.

Which is why it was quite surprising to see Cornet’s name linked with Fenerbahce, who are top of the table in the Turkish Super Lig.

Turkish newspaper Takvim reported online (11 December) that Fener are looking for reinforcements at centre-back and on the wings in the transfer window, and that Cornet’s representatives had been in talks.

“A surprise offer came to the Yellow-Navy Blue team. Maxwel Cornet, who plays for West Ham United, was recommended to Fenerbahce through managers,” the report read.

Of course, that is no guarantee that a deal can be struck but if there is a possibility that the Hammers can do business with Fener then they should be laughing all the way to the bank.

Cornet is also likely to be unavailable for most of January due to his involvement at the Africa Cup of Nations with the Ivory Coast, another reason why cashing in would not be the worst idea.

If we’re being truthful, whether it’s Fener or not, West Ham should absolutely be looking to move Cornet on in the next window.

In other West Ham news, Michael Carrick has been contacted by an intermediary to gauge his interest in replacing David Moyes according to reports.
