West Ham player ratings in Europa League clash v Sevilla

West Ham will be devastated as they come away from the first leg of their Europa League tie against Sevilla 1-0 down.

The Hammers performed valiantly but were undone by some very poor defending at set-pieces which led to the only goal of the game.

However, David Moyes’ side do have the chance to overturn the deficit at the London Stadium.

West Ham

Alfonse Areola – 6

Didn’t have an awful lot to do throughout the game but was excellent when called upon. There was very little the Frenchman could have done to stop the goal.

Ben Johnson – 8

Very solid in defence and calm on the ball considering the nature of the game and his lack of experience at this level. Dealt with the Sevilla attackers with ease.

Kurt Zouma – 7

Commanded the defence very well. Virtually everything that was whipped into the box was dealt with by the centre-back.

West Ham

Craig Dawson – 6

Held down the defence next to Zouma excellently. Very calm in possession and dealt with the Spanish sides intricate play.

Aaron Cresswell – 6

Disappointing from set pieces and open play deliveries considering his usual standards. Solid defensively but didn’t have an awful lot to do.

Declan Rice – 7

A typical Rice performance. Didn’t stop working and giving his all throughout the match as he recovered from illness

Pablo Fornals – 5

A pretty mundane performance from the Spaniard barely made an impact and was sloppy in possession at times.

West Ham

Manuel Lanzini – 5

Certainly grew into the game after being very sloppy in possession in the first half. Did not offer nearly enough on the ball in terms of decisive attacking play.

Nikola Vlasic – 4

Will be devastated he didn’t bury his header in the first half, the Irons’ best chance of the game. Made little impact throughout the game hence being subbed off just after the hour mark.

Michail Antonio – 9

The best player on the pitch for West Ham. Held the ball up and brought others into play very well, ran tirelessly and caused the Sevilla defence bug problems. The only thing he lacked was a goal.
