West Ham need to be relegated from the Premier League, survival would be a disaster

Relegation was a minor concern for West Ham at the start of the season, but now it’s a likelihood, and one that may actually benefit them.

Wolves secured their first win of the season against West Ham, showcasing the struggles that the Hammers are set to face if they are to remain in the Premier League.

Despite yet another embarrassing defeat, it’s highly unlikely that Nuno Espirito Santo will be sacked, given the fact that the Irons are in the process of bolstering the squad with players that suit his way of playing.

It’s not likely to be something that West Ham fans want to hear, given that he is looking almost certain to take them down to the Championship, but that may be what this club needs.

Premier League survival would paper over the cracks at West Ham

Ever since West Ham won the Europa Conference League, the Irons have been on a downward trajectory, with the current campaign certainly seeing them reach new lows.

Recruitment has been woeful, managerial decisions have been even worse, and the rot has truly started to set in at the London Stadium.

Fans won’t want to see this club drop into the Championship – no one ever does.

However, from a long-term perspective, it is exactly what needs to happen.

West Ham need a total refresh from top to bottom. Recruitment has to change, and those players on high wages but not living up to expectations need to be moved on.

If the Hammers stay in the Premier League, none of that will be possible, but relegation to the Championship would present the opportunity for a rebuild, which has benefitted the likes of Aston Villa and Sunderland in the past.

Who are the West Ham players who would thrive in the Championship?

Whether it be due to a lack of depth or Nuno’s trust, there are several young players who have been afforded the chance to shine in the Premier League.

Freddie Potts and Ollie Scarles are the two that standout, and if West Ham were to face relegation, they would thrive from a season in the Championship.

The likes of Max Kilman and Lucas Paqueta would be sold, and the Hammers would be able to build a squad that represents the true values of West Ham, which is one thing that the current squad lacks.

If that were to happen, it would be a huge summer, and one that would require some change at the top, but there would be zero doubt that the Irons would come back stronger from it.
