West Ham: Jarrod Bowen dropped by Gareth Southgate for England showdown v Italy
Phil Foden is set to start on the right of the attack for England, meaning West Ham ace Jarrod Bowen is likely to be dropped against Italy.
As reported by Sky Sports News (17 October), the Manchester City forward is expected to win his 18th start for the Three Lions on the right-hand side of the attack for the Euro qualifier.
Bowen started England’s international friendly against Australia in this position, but according to The Daily Express (13 October), he “struggled to impact the game from the right-wing”, perhaps informing Southgate’s decision.
While England did grind out a 1-0 win against the Socceroos thanks to a second-half Ollie Watkins strike, they did not look their best. Southgate sent out a second-string side for the friendly with the crucial Euro qualifier against Italy just around the corner.
Per SofaScore, Bowen had a decent time with his fifth England cap, with 86 per cent passing accuracy (19/22), three aerial duels won and one interception and tackle. However, with just three attempted shots across 90 minutes and only 39 touches, he didn’t exactly set the world alight.
Based on league form, Bowen should be selected without question. Per FBRef, Foden has played 6.2 90s of football this season, while the Hammers star has clocked in 8.0 full 90s. Foden comes out on top for assists with three, but Bowen’s five goals sees him lead the race for English scorers in the Premier League.

Southgate clearly has his regular starters and Foden has been a consistent threat for England since his debut in 2020. With appearances at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup, the 23-year-old’s international experience vastly outweighs Bowen’s.
Should Bowen continue his excellent form, Southgate will be unable to avoid him, but for now all he can do is continue to impress at club level and make the most of each international opportunity.
In other West Ham news, two first-team players are now in doubt for the Hammers’ clash against Aston Villa clash.
