Tomas Soucek performances not the reason for West Ham United poor start to 2022/23 season

West Ham United are going through a difficult start to their campaign where they’ve just managed to secure four points from the first seven Premier League matches [Premier League].

It is because of this the Hammers find themselves placed in the drop zone when the club competitions came to a halt because of the international break.

One of the reasons highlighted for the Irons’ poor show in the season is the performance of veteran defensive midfielder Tomas Soucek.

West Ham

Harsh

Soucek is one of the players who has been under some criticism for West Ham’s poor show this season and by the look of it, it seems like that is not entirely unfair.

However, looking at the overall numbers of the 27-year-old, it doesn’t look like his performance has seen any dip this season.

During the 2022-23 league campaign, Soucek is averaging 2.4 tackles, 1.9 interceptions and two clearances per game, pretty similar to what he has done ever since moving to London Stadium where he averaged 2.1 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 2.7 clearances per match [Whoscored].

West Ham

Therefore, it seems highly unfair for the Czech Republic international to be criticised for the side’s horrible start.

Soucek has been a West Ham player since the summer of 2020 when he permanently moved from Slavia Prague in a deal worth £14.5 million.

Since then, he has represented his current in 115 matches across all competitions where he managed to score 21 goals and provided three assists in the process [Transfermarkt].
