Tim Steidten a West Ham United genius as Said Benrahma transfer news emerges

Tim Steidten needs to be given his flowers for getting rid of Said Benrahma for West Ham United after Lyon issues come to light.

Mohamed Toubache-Ter reported via X on 13 November that Lyon want to sell Benrahma in the January transfer window despite only buying him from the Irons in the summer.

The journalist also revealed that the Algeria international was left out of the French club’s derby against Saint-Etienne on Sunday [10 November] due to “non-sporting” reasons, with Pierre Sage sanctioning him.

While those criticisms remain, one cannot help but tip their hat to the Irons technical director for offloading Benraham at the right time, that too while bagging a decent transfer fee.

Lyon signed Benrahma on loan for an initial £5.1million in February before forking out another £12.3million to make the move permanent in the summer, taking the total sum to £17.4million [Lyon].

While the figure is still significantly lower than the £25million the Hammers paid to sign the attacker on loan in 2020 and then permanently the following year [BBC], they are entitled to 10 per cent of the capital gain should Lyon sell him in the future.

There is no doubt about Benrahma’s abilities as a player, but there have been concerns regarding his behaviour, which seems to have now become a problem for Lyon.

The Hammers may have their own problems right now, but having to sanction a player for non-sporting reasons is not one of them.

In other West Ham news, Irons medics are reluctant to put a timeframe on Niclas Fullkrug’s return as concerns over his Achilles tendon injury grow.
