Thomas Tuchel reaches disrespectful levels with Jarrod Bowen after Wembley scenes
Jarrod Bowen was an unused substitute for England as they saw off Serbia with a routine 2-0 win at Wembley on Thursday night.
The West Ham star is fighting to earn a spot in Thomas Tuchel‘s final squad for next summer’s World Cup in North America.
Bowen is doing all he can to earn England recognition, despite his West Ham colleagues so often underperforming alongside him.
And while the Hammers favourite was included as part of Tuchel’s latest squad, he was not given an opportunity to prove himself at Wembley.
Bowen’s West Ham future has been called into question, but of more immediate concern at a personal level will be proving to Tuchel he deserves more minutes.
Thomas Tuchel snubs Jarrod Bowen in England win vs Serbia
Tuchel had the luxury of experimenting somewhat against Serbia, with England already assured of a place in next year’s finals.
However, Bowen was benched once again as he was against Wales. Of more annoyance to the 28-year-old, though, will be that he did not even get any minutes off the bench.
Instead, Tuchel turned to Jude Bellingham – entirely understandable – Adam Wharton, Phil Foden, Eberechi Eze and even Jordan Henderson.
Wharton and Henderson may play in a different area of the field, while Bellingham was always going to come on, but turning to Foden and Eze over Bowen is simply not on.
Bowen has been superb for West Ham once again this season and his stats are better than those two aforementioned names.
On that basis, Tuchel is disrespecting Bowen by not even giving him minutes from the substitutes’ bench in what was a dead-rubber.
Bowen third in Premier League for open play goals in 2025
To ram home just how good Bowen has been in an underperforming side this calendar year, his 10 open play goals in the Premier League are bettered only by Bryan Mbuemo (12) and Erling Haaland (20).
This season alone, Bowen’s four direct goal involvements in the Premier League is more than Eze (three) and Foden (two).
| Player | Open player goals 2025 |
| Erling Haaland | 20 |
| Bryan Mbeumo | 12 |
| Jarrod Bowen | 10 |
It may well be that Tuchel gives Bowen a chance in the final qualifier against Armenia on Sunday, but surely the West Ham ace should be getting more chances at this stage?
West Ham fans need no telling of just how special a player Bowen is, but clearly Tuchel still does not full understand that.
For now, Tuchel’s loss will be Nuno Espirito Santo’s gain as Bowen is at least getting the chance to rest up before returning to Rush Green.
