Sullivan should forget Graham Potter appointment amid West Ham manager twist

David Sullivan must get his next managerial appointment right should Julen Lopetegui be dismissed at West Ham United as early as Monday evening.

The Spaniard will take charge of the Hammers against Wolves on 9 December, knowing anything less than three points will lead to his dismissal in East London.

However, despite Graham Potter reportedly being willing to take charge until the end of the season [talkSPORT, 9 December], RB Leipzig are planning to throw a spanner in the works and are lining up the Englishman to succeed Marco Rose [Alan Nixon].

Therefore, Sullivan should cut his losses and give up on his pursuit of Potter with much more desirable options in the Irons’ sights.

West Ham United should move on from Graham Potter

The former Brighton and Chelsea manager has been without work for almost two years now – that is a remarkably long time to remain unemployed in football.

While the argument can be made that Potter is merely biding his time for the best opportunity to present itself, the man who made his name in the Premier League on the South Coast may be different from the man who arrives in East London.

Furthermore, Sullivan has a mixed track record of managerial appointments at the London Stadium to say the least.

Should the owner be on the lookout for a new boss once again, the name through the door has to be game-changing for West Ham.

The most desirable option available is undoubtedly former Juventus boss Max Allegri; the Hammers would face stiff competition from AS Roma for his signature [Calciomercato], but the risk-to-reward is far greater than appointing Potter, and the Italian has signalled his eagerness to lead the project.

West Ham could also pursue a tried-and-tested approach and recruit from within the Premier League; with Brentford boss Thomas Frank mooted to make the switch across the capital, Sullivan would be “mad” not to consider the German.

Potter made his rise to stardom with his sensational efforts coaching Swedish second tier outfit Ostersunds FK, guiding them to the Allsvenskan and a late run in the 2017/18 Europa League.

After his abysmal spell at Chelsea, the 49-year-old could fancy another spell abroad with Leipzig, and Sullivan would be best served to let bygones be bygones and pursue the big-name appointment all West Ham supporters crave should Lopetegui be sent packing in East London.
