Reported Rangers swoop not what West Ham need

West Ham United have had many problems this season, that’s plain to see. But one big one has been their inability to keep clean sheets.

They’ve conceded 38 goals in 23 games so far this season, with a goal difference of -11. They’ve only managed two clean sheets in their last seven Premier League matches.

The struggles of the centre backs has been a big reason for their struggles, with only Angelo Ogbonna having a decent season at the heart of the defence.

It’s no surprise, then, that the club have been linked with a new centre back, and sure enough Football Insider reported on Thursday that the Hammers have joined the race for Rangers stalwart Connor Goldson.

Goldson is on their list of centre back targets, but is only being eyed for a summer move rather than a January move.

What’s the point of that, though? The Hammers are in a relegation battle right now, so why would you wait until the summer if Goldson’s your guy?

This smacks of arrogance from David Gold and David Sullivan that they will get out of trouble, despite the fact that the team is on the same amount of points as two of the bottom three.

Even if they were to get a centre back this month, though, it surely shouldn’t be Goldson. The Irons need Premier League-proven talent, and the Gers star is far from that.

Honestly, they should have got Gary Cahill last summer, while somebody like Ben Gibson from Burnley would appear to be an ideal signing.

Goldson, though, simply doesn’t have the top flight experience needed to make a big impact in a relegation battle.
