Nuno Espirito Santo signs off on own West Ham sack after comments post-Nottingham Forest
Nuno Espirito Santo’s time as West Ham United manager is surely up on the back of Tuesday’s loss to Nottingham Forest.
Murillo’s own goal after 13 minutes put the hosts in front at the London Stadium, but West Ham went on to lose 2-1 to Forest in a huge relegation six-pointer.
West Ham had a goal ruled out that would have made it 2-0, and from there Nicolas Dominguez levelled up and Morgan Gibbs-White won it from the penalty spot late on.
Nuno cut a dejected figure at full-time, seemingly aware that this really was a must-win match if he was to avoid the sack.
West Ham are now seven points adrift of 17th-placed Nottingham Forest, meaning relegation is now as serious a threat as ever.
Nuno Espirito Santo gives immediate reaction to Forest defeat
Alphonse Areola produced a fine piece of goalkeeping in the first half, but he was the villain at the end after conceding the penalty that won the game for Forest.
Nuno spoke to Sky Sports shortly after full-time and offered little to suggest that he believes he will remain in the job.
The Portuguese was asked to give a message to fans but said it’s hard to say anything, which will not exactly fill supporters with confidence.
And while Nuno did say he keeps believing in himself, he added what he is going through is “part of the game”.
It was clear from the short interview that Nuno is done at West Ham, and all that now remains is for David Sullivan to pull the trigger.
Who is the favourite to replace Nuno at West Ham?
Michael Carrick remains the favourite to succeed Nuno once his sacking is confirmed.
Slaven Bilic is also believed to be high on the list of candidates, as is – surprisingly – Frank Lampard.
| Position | Team | Games | Points |
| 17 | Nottingham Forest | 21 | 21 |
| 18 | West Ham | 21 | 14 |
| 19 | Burnley | 20 | 12 |
| 20 | Wolves | 20 | 6 |
Tuesday’s clash against Forest was must-win – let alone not lose – and West Ham failed once again.
Sullivan will surely now be resigned to relegation, with that set to be one of the bleakest years in the Hammers’ proud history.
