Nuno Espirito Santo alarm bells ringing at West Ham amid potential transfer chief reprieve

Nuno Espirito Santo will surely know that he has a major job on his hands if he is to make West Ham competitive once again.

The Hammers have lurched from one crisis to another since David Moyes’ departure in the summer of 2024, with Graham Potter’s reign the latest sorry chapter for a club who have endured continued frustrations of late.

Nuno has parachuted into a difficult situation at West Ham, as it is shaping up to be a season of struggle for the East Londoners, given that they have taken just four points from their opening seven games.

Matters on the pitch will be concerning enough for the Portuguese boss, but this impending situation behind the scenes will also have the alarm bells ringing for him.

Maximilian Hahn may now be set to stay at West Ham

West Ham recruitment chief Maximilain Hahn has attracted interest in recent days, with German club VfL Bochum lining him up as a potential candidate to take over their sports manager role.

The 29-year-old is currently the head of technical recruitment and analysis at the London Stadium, and the Hammers’ business in the transfer market hasn’t exactly been exemplary since he was appointed in 2024.

A move to Bochum had recently looked likely for the German, but it has now emerged that the Bundesliga 2 outfit are instead eyeing Bernd Korzynietz as their “desired candidate,” according to BILD.

It is understood that Hahn is being perceived as someone who is too “inexperienced” to take on the role, which should provide serious concern in East London, both for Nuno and the rest of the hierarchy.

If one of their key players behind the scenes in terms of transfer business is being viewed as ill-equipped to take on a similar role in the German second tier, then it certainly begs the question as to whether he is fit for his job in E20.

Nuno Espirito Santo will be afraid of being thrown under the bus

Nuno has a difficult job on his hands at West Ham, and he will be all too familiar with their managerial struggles in recent years.

Several esteemed coaches have tried and failed to lead an improvement at the helm of the East Londoners, with the board often not conducive to their efforts to bring success.

The willingness to improve and develop as a club has to come from the top down, and Nuno will surely be worried about being thrown under the bus, as some of his predecessors arguably were before him.

The 51-year-old proved at Nottingham Forest that he is still a very capable Premier League boss, but he will need to be supplied with the necessary tools to turn this team around.

In cases like the Hahn one that is currently unfolding, it is often hard to shake the idea that West Ham aren’t really equipped to meet their lofty ambitions.
