Maxwel Cornet could be a survival wildcard for West Ham, Lopetegui should use him

Maxwel Cornet’s future at West Ham looks bleak with a return to the London Stadium expected in the January window but the Irons should be looking to utilise him.

Cornet has had a troubled time at West Ham since arriving in 2022 having made just 37 appearances with his current loan at Southampton looking certain to be cut short (Jack Rosser).

The Ivorian has since been linked with a move to Championship promotion hopefuls Blackburn (225foot) if his loan at Saints is cut short but the Irons should be looking to keep him at the club.

Given the injury status alongside the attacking woes of those at the club currently, Cornet could become something of a wildcard for Julen Lopetegui in a bid to save his job.

Maxwel Cornet deserves another shot at a West Ham career

Has Cornet set the world alight recently? Probably not. Although neither has Danny Ings, Luis Guilherme or Niclas Fullkrug.

However, Cornet has shown some serious quality throughout his career, most notably during his time at Burnley and if a club can get him back to those types of performances, they will unlock a serious attacking threat and it’s one that the Irons need to take a chance on.

Especially given the injury to Jarrod Bowen, the Hammer are light in attacking areas and there is no risk in giving him one more opportunity to prove himself.

West Ham

With him already under contract at the club, West Ham wouldn’t be paying any money in an attempt to rejuvenate their front line and it’s simply a gamble that comes with no consequences.

Things can’t get much worse at the London Stadium but they have the potential to get much, much better and Cornet, if he can apply himself, can contribute to that.
