Manchester City rub Premier League title win in West Ham United face with new Kalvin Phillips move

West Ham United will have been frustrated to come away empty-handed in their final Premier League game against Manchester City.

The Hammers Premier League season and David Moyes’ tenure came to an end in a disappointing fashion at the Etihad on Sunday (19 May) as they were well beaten 3-1 by Pep Guaridola’s side.

City have now won each of the last four Premier League titles, a new record in England and while the majority of the players celebrated on the field, Hammers loanee Kalvin Phillips was forced to watch on from the stands.

The England international joined the ranks at the London Stadium in January but was unable to put together a consistent run of form as he was ridiculed by fans and pundits alike for his poor displays.

It would have only frustrated Irons supporters more when they saw Phillips included in the Champions social media graphic celebrating their fourth title alongside the likes of Pep Guardiola, Kevin de Bruyne and Rodri.

In the image posted to X on Sunday (19 May), the midfielder is spotted alongside Ederson and Matheus Nunes at top of the graphic, which seems a bit rich when he only made four league appearances for City this term.

Will West Ham United sign Kalvin Phillips permanently in the summer transfer window?

It has been clear for some time that Phillips won’t be a West Ham player when next season starts, but the Irons will likely be incredibly frustrated to see their opponents lauding a player seconds after you’ve tasted a defeat.

Whether it was deliberate or not, it just feels like Guardiola’s side are almost gloating and rubbing their win in the Irons’ faces. It likely wasn’t intended in that way, but it comes across slightly strangely.

Hopefully, Phillips will get back to his best wherever he ends up next season, but the Irons will be glad that he isn’t on their books come the start of next term under Julen Lopetegui.
