Jonjo Shelvey: West Ham don’t have a better Premier League squad than Newcastle

Jonjo Shelvey has ludicrously claimed that West Ham don’t have a better squad than Newcastle in the Premier League this season.

The Hammers travel to St. James’ Park on Saturday afternoon looking to cement their Champions League spot, with the home side not yet safe from relegation.

Shelvey has claimed that recent results have given the Magpies great confidence as the season comes to an end, with a response expected this weekend.

Speaking to talkSPORT on Thursday afternoon, Shelvey made the laughable claim while comparing the two squads together ahead of the clash.

“The squad we’ve got on paper, I don’t think theirs is better than ours, to be honest. I think we’ve got a great squad, we just haven’t performed to the level we can. It’s only recently we’ve picked up a few better results.

“That’s given us the belief to finish this season strong, then come back next season and kick on.”

Back it up.

These are big words from Shelvey, and it is time to back them up; which is, coincidentally something that Newcastle consistently fail to do under Steve Bruce.

Beating Burnley and the constant faltering of Fulham below them in this relegation battle must have given some of the Magpies false confidence.

There is a huge 23-point gap in the Premier League between the Irons and Newcastle, and we will take that as our proof that this is one of the bigger laughable claims we have heard in a long, long time.

Looking at Newcastle’s team on paper, the only players that we could potentially take are Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson, but that is due to our injury woes in the final third.

David Moyes has created a perfect blend this season, and the Irons will take care of their business on the pitch at St. James’ Park, and make sure that Shelvey quickly eats his words.
