Joe Worrall move surely on the cards for West Ham after Wednesday report

It is not exactly how clear West Ham are going to be in the transfer market this month.

Reports seem to keep conflicting themselves and, to an extent, understandably so given that deals in January can be so protracted.

But it goes without saying that David Moyes would be keen for some January reinforcement especially with Mohammed Kudus and Nayef Aguerd headed for Africa Cup of Nations duty.

The absence of the latter perhaps explains why links to Nottingham Forest centre-back Joe Worrall re-emerged this week, with the Daily Mirror reporting (1 January, page 44) that the Hammers were pondering a move.

The Mirror published a new story about Worrall on Wednesday (3 January, page 50) explaining that new Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo is willing to sanction his exit to bring in a new centre-back of his own.

“Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo has told the club he wants a new centre-back and is prepared to sell captain Joe Worrall,” the story from James Nursey said.

“Worrall, 26, who joined the Reds 12 years ago as a teenager, was a key man in Forest’s 2021-22 Championship promotion.

“He then made 30 appearances in the Premier League last season to help them survive. But the defender has featured in just seven top-flight games this season despite signing a two-year contract extension in September.

“Nuno, who replaced Steve Cooper as boss before Christmas, has only used the 6ft 4in defender briefly off the bench. Worrall’s fall from grace has alerted other clubs and Forest may also sell fellow defender Scott McKenna, who has only made five appearances.”

Sometimes with transfers you can put two and two together and make five, but on this occasion the pieces seem to be fitting together quite nicely.

With Thilo Kehrer also expected to leave this month, Moyes would no doubt want a little bit of cover in defence and Worrall fits the bill as a player with Premier League experience.

Everything points towards one conclusion and that is a new West Ham transfer is on the cards this month.
