James Ward-Prowse decision must be reconsidered after what West Ham United star did v Man City

Kurt Zouma has been the West Ham captain under David Moyes’ reign, but that looks to be coming to an end as Julen Lopetegui arrives at the London Stadium.

According to The Athletic [15 May], James Ward-Prowse is in contention to brandish the captain’s armband next season, with Lopetegui set to make several changes.

However, the Spaniard may decide against the 29-year-old entering into a leadership role at the London Stadium, especially following his performance against Manchester City on the final day.

Ian Wright called out the former Southampton ace for his role in Phil Foden’s opener on Sunday 19 May as the Hammers lost 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

As the Irons enter into a new era, following Moyes’ exit, it is unlikely that the new manager will settle for anything other than his squad performing at 100 per cent.

However, having continued his form into the campaign, the midfielder finished in a slump of form with only three goal contributions in his final 16 league matches as the Hammers struggled.

A star such as Jarrod Bowen could be an alternative for Lopetegui as he searches for a new captain. Zouma is certainly no longer an option after a season full of criticism.

The goalscoring sensation is a much-loved figure at the London Stadium and is likely someone the rest of the squad will look up to after notching 20 goals and 10 assists in all competitions.

Lopetegui should be able to make the correct decision upon his arrival at the club this summer. He has been given enough warnings already over his future captain choice.

In other West Ham news, the wife of a Hammers player has potentially stirred up a controversy with her recent comments on social media accusing the club of bias.
