Edson Alvarez could question West Ham future amid Guido Rodriguez transfer update
West Ham are extremely active in the transfer market right now but one move in particular might leave one star questioning their future.
A free transfer for Argentina ace Guido Rodriguez is close to completion and Fabrizio Romano reported on Saturday (3 August) that he was en route to complete a medical and sign a two-year contract.
While it certainly looks a shrewd piece of business to sign a World Cup and Copa America champion on a free transfer, after his Real Betis contract expired, it might not be news welcomed by Edson Alvarez.
The Hammers signed the Mexico international from Ajax 12 months ago and he featured regularly under David Moyes last campaign.
But there have already been links with a move away from the London Stadium with Manchester United reportedly showing interest earlier in the window [Florian Plettenberg, 22 June].
Now injury concerns have seen the versatile midfielder miss out on the pre-season tour in the US under Julen Lopetegui.
Now that a deal to sign Rodriguez looks close, Alvarez may ponder whether this position in the team is under threat.
Edson Alvarez West Ham future affected by Guido Rodriguez
Rodriguez has two Copa America titles and a World Cup in his trophy cabinet showcasing the experienced pro that Lopetegui is bringing in.
The 30-year-old is an out-and-out defensive midfielder, which will provide West Ham with a great midfield base ahead of the season opener against Aston Villa.
This could see Rodriguez come straight into the starting XI, especially considering the injury that Alvarez is suffering from.
The Mexican has to return from his lay-off and hit the ground running or to make sure he remains part of the XI.

A 4-3-3 formation looks likely to be utilised by Lopetegui in his debut season at the London Stadium which could see both feature in the same starting XI.
But ultimately, Alavrez’s future could all be affected by how much football he gets once Rodriguez is through the door.
If he finds himself on the periphery of the first team then he might just be pondering his future in East London.
