Edson Alvarez astonishes as clear message sent to West Ham boss Potter

Edson Alvarez has been a contentious star at West Ham since he joined the Hammers in 2023.

The Mexican international joined the London Stadium from Ajax with high hopes.

However, Alvarez has proved to be inconsistent at West Ham, which has caused him to fail to lock down a starting spot.

As a result, Alvarez has been linked away from West Ham as Graham Potter searches for a potential replacement.

However, the 27-year-old is not going to let the Englishman sell him without a fight.

Alvarez impresses for Mexico yet again

Away from West Ham, Alvarez continues to prove he is a vital asset for Mexico.

The defensive midfielder has 87 caps for his country and has won two Gold Cups and a Nations League.

Alvarez impressed in Mexico’s 1-0 victory over Turkey earlier this week.

Now, the 28-year-old has followed this up again with a 3-2 win over the Dominican Republic in the Gold Cup.

ESPN (15 June) were astonished by Alvarez’s display, stating how he “changed the game” with his opener before he had a hand in Mexico’s second in a brilliant performance from the captain.

Before the game, the 28-year-old said via Gabriel Peraza (16 May): “I consider myself a defensive player, a recovering player. That’s my greatest strength”.

However, it has now become clear that he has the ability to change the game up top, something West Ham have been crying out for.

His recent performances have sent a clear message to Potter that he can be a vital asset for the Hammers next season.

The fact that he can be deployed as a defensive midfielder or be used in a more attacking role shows his versatility.

This is surely something Potter will have to think about going into the transfer window regarding Alvarez’s future.

West Ham should look to keep Alvarez

As it stands, Alvarez is in fantastic form. He could return to the London Stadium in August with another trophy if he captains Mexico to another Gold Cup title.

If this becomes a reality, Potter would be foolish to rid himself of the midfielder.

Hopefully, Alvarez can now continue his excellent run throughout the summer and take it into the 2025/26 Premier League campaign.

If he succeeds in doing this, he could become one of West Ham’s best players for the upcoming season.
