Edin Terzic holds head coach talks after West Ham links

Edin Terzic has long-been linked with the manager role at West Ham and was even mooted as a replacement for Julen Lopetegui prior to an upturn in form.

But Hammers supporters will be pretty surprised to learn where the highly thought of 42-year-old could end up for his next coaching role.

The widely-linked former Borussia Dortmund coach is potentially in line for a surprise move to Iranian side Persepolis Tehran, according to Bild.

The German publication shared on Saturday [28 December] that last season’s Champions League finalist boss could head to Asia to take his first job since leaving Dortmund in a prospective move no-one saw coming.

Bild stated that talks have already taken place with the Iranian club and Terzic about the possibility of taking over.

This would come as even more of a shock to Hammers fans considering Terzic’s reported refusal of an approach from David Sullivan, especially given his time as Slaven Bilic’s assistant in East London between 2015 and 2017.

West Ham target Edin Terzic heading to Iran?

Whatever West Ham doesn’t have that, with respect, an Iranian club does in terms of high-profile challenges, we would all love to know.

But it seems Terzic is open to dialogue with Persepolis, an outfit in Iran’s capital of Tehran who won the nation’s top flight last season, the Persian Gulf Pro League. They are currently ranked third in the division this season, five points adrift of leaders Sepahan.

Karim Bagheri, once a player of Charlton Athletic in the early 2000s, has the reins in interim charge after the sacking of former Villarreal boss Juan Carlos Garrido on 22 December.

According to Bild [6 December], Sullivan had approached Terzic directly with a “very specific” offer to succeed Lopetegui, with the Spaniard seemingly in the last-chance saloon, but the ex-Dortmund boss rebuffed the attempt.

It is likely that a lucrative offer will be on the table in Iran for Terzic, for the club who play in the 78,000-capacity Azadi Stadium.

It is certainly a development worth keeping tabs on, as Lopetegui meanwhile looks to ambitiously go five unbeaten in East London with the showdown against Liverpool on Sunday [29 December].

However, if the Irons can’t maintain their recent run of form, which has seen them go four unbeaten, then they may ultimately end up rueing their decision

In other West Ham news, the pressure builds to keep hold of Aaron Wan-Bissaka following his recent form.
