David Moyes drops hint in midfielder chase as West Ham United transfer news emerges

Much to the frustration of all West Ham United supporters, the club have yet to sign a replacement for Declan Rice.

Plenty of time has passed since the midfield maestro made his £105million switch to Premier League rivals Arsenal earlier this summer.

And fans of the East London club have had to settle for rejection at this stage, with West Ham seeing their £40million bid for Chelsea ace Conor Gallagher rejected [Fabrizio Romano, 25 July].

The Blues will definitely play hardball with the midfielder this summer, but time is running out for David Moyes to fill the gap left by Rice.

The manager has, however, dropped a major hint as to how the club are getting on with their pursuit of a new midfielder.

Despite no new arrival in the area vacated by Rice, West Ham have allowed young defensive midfielder Freddie Potts to leave for Wycombe Wanderers on loan.

As per the official Wycombe website, the 19-year-old has joined the League One club from the Hammers on a season-long loan.

The teenager may not have exactly been a first-team regular, but he was certainly on the brink of that, having made two appearances in last season’s Europa Conference League.

West Ham fans may be dismayed at the decision to let him go given the current midfield situation at the London Stadium, but it perhaps demonstrates that Moyes knows there is a new recruit coming very shortly.

Whether or not that is Chelsea ace Gallagher remains to be seen, with the likes of Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse and Manchester United’s Scott McTominay also linked [Dharmesh Sheth, 27 July].

In other West Ham news, Moyes has mooted an important first-team role for one youngster that the club like “a lot.”
