Why Nuno has done little to quash West Ham sack talk after post-Watford comments

Nuno Espirito Santo already appears to be living on borrowed time as West Ham United manager.

The Hammers were strong favourites to go back up to the Premier League automatically this season after being relegated in May.

However, they have taken just two points from the first nine on offer.

Saturday's 1-1 draw at Watford follows a 2-1 home loss to Charlton Athletic last week and 2-2 draw at Burnley on the opening day.

A section of travelling West Ham fans chanted for Nuno to be sacked at Vicarage Road.

Nuno was asked about those chants after the match, and his answer will not exactly turn the tide.

Only promotion will do for West Ham this season after the financial disaster of going down.

Nuno stayed on as manager, despite failing to keep the Irons up over an adequate period of time.

In fairness, Graham Potter did most of the damage last season and Nuno just was not able to do enough to correct the errors.

But it is a real concern that he has now lost the backing of plenty of the fanbase.

When asked about the chants from the away section at his post-match press conference, Nuno said: "The fans are the most important part of our club

"I respect them so much. I understand everything. I just ask again, keep believing, keep trusting us, keep going and we'll try to revert it."

Nuno did not exactly come out fighting, but rather gave the response we have heard from him multiple times before.

Supporters are sick of hearing about the efforts to turn things around. Instead, they want to see a manager show some passion and actually do what he says he is going to do.

As for "trusting" the players, they continue to do little to deserve any of that from the fans.

When could West Ham pull the plug on Nuno?

The West Ham chiefs - what remains of them, anyway - cannot just sit by and watch this mess continue to unfold.

West Ham have no right to walk the Championship, but nor should they be 19th after three matches.

The Irons have a tricky test against Wolves at the London Stadium in midweek.

Lose that and is it inconceivable that Nuno is a gonner? There are also clashes with Derby County, Bolton Wanderers, Wrexham and then Millwall over the next few weeks.

If Nuno was not aware already, he certainly now knows he is facing a serious battle to keep hold of his job.
