Zaidu Sanusi became too expensive for West Ham on deadline day

West Ham United opted against signing Porto left-back Zaidu Sanusi on summer transfer deadline day due to its cost, according to Record.

The Hammers were keen on the 24-year-old Nigerian international and linked with a last-ditch move to bring him to the London Stadium.

However, having spent £62million getting deals done for two major signings and two loan signings, West Ham could not afford to go for Sanusi despite their initial plans.

David Moyes would have loved to add a left-back to his squad, but he can have no complaints after bringing in a goalkeeper, a centre-back, a central midfielder and an attacking midfielder.

The Irons will have to stick with Aaron Cresswell and Arthur Masuaku till at least January, and youngsters from the academy in the position could also get a chance.

After parting with considerable cash for Kurt Zouma and Nikola Vlasic within the space of four days, West Ham had already exhausted almost all their transfer budget.

The Hammers had to settle for a loan deal for Alex Kral, and that was the last move they could afford.

Sanusi will have to wait till January to see whether the club will return with an offer, but Moyes only loves to make signing mid-way through the campaign if it is necessary and compulsory, and a move is more realistic next summer.

Masuaku will need to stay fit all season and show that he can be available anytime he is called upon.

West Ham could be playing with left wing-backs regularly this season, and that means some wingers could be playing in the position instead of full-backs.
