Wout Weghorst open to summer move amid West Ham links

In a recent interview with De Telegraaf, West Ham target Wout Weghorst has claimed he’s open to leaving Wolfsburg to take the next step in his career.

The Dutchman enjoyed a fruitful campaign for the German side this season, scoring 20 league goals which guided his side to a remarkable fourth-place finish in the Bundesliga.

He’s also made four appearances for his national team, and is expected to be their first-choice striker for next month’s Euros.

Independent’s German football expert Stefan Bienkowski hailed his ‘incredible’ achievements on his Twitter profile.

His goals in crucial stages of games helped propel Wolfsburg over the line in certain games and also earned them a place in next season’s Champions League.

The 28-year-old has been continually linked with a move to the Premier League and recently has emerged as a target for West Ham.

The Hammers are looking for a new forward to lead the line next season and have identified Weghorst as the right man for the job. He’s also being looked at by AS Roma boss Jose Mourinho.

Speaking about his future, Weghorst said, “I want to be stimulated every time and get out of my comfort zone. That will happen again soon.

“In addition, I feel greatly appreciated in Wolfsburg. If the opportunity arises to take a step higher, we will listen to the story of that club and the complete picture must be right.

“But as you can imagine, my focus is now entirely on the European Championship.”

West Ham

Would be tough to pull off

Every player dreams of playing in the Champions League and Wolfsburg will offer him that opportunity next season.

However, the German side are unlikely to go past the group stages, and even if they drop into the Europa League where we’ll be too, they won’t be favourites to win the entire tournament.

So, Weghorst must ask himself whether he’s content to play six games in the Champions League and then the Europa League, or move to the Premier League, live in England and play at a club that’s finished 6th and expected to strengthen ahead of next season.

We have not been a team challenging to win the league every year, but the lure of playing in the English top flight may be enough to get him to the London Stadium.

He has previously said that he dreamt of playing in the Premier League [Kicker], and while it’s going to be tough, it’s certainly not impossible to get him to West Ham this summer.
