WHZ View: Gerard Pique would be a statement signing for West Ham

West Ham are considering making a “cheeky bid” to sign Gerard Pique from Barcelona in the January transfer window, according to reports from Claret and Hugh.

It will be an ambitious move for the Hammers, but they will be encouraged by the fact that Barcelona are willing to allow the 34-year-old to leave the club.

Pique, who has already accepted a pay-cut at Barcelona, may need to take a further pay-cut to secure a move to the London club.

The Hammers could be looking to sign a defender to fill the void left by Angelo Ogbonna who will miss the rest of the season through injury. Pique would be a perfect replacement for him.

Moyes preferably would target a left-footed defender, but Pique would still be a massive addition. He will be a statement signing for the club, even at this age.

The Spaniard is a world-class defender, with Rio Ferdinand hailing him as a “phenomenal” player. He has won four Champions League trophies and nine league titles (including one Premier League title for Manchester United). He is also a world-cup winner with Spain.

West Ham are building something exciting and getting a player of Pique’s calibre would galvanize the dressing room.

His sheer presence will lift the already supercharged atmosphere at West Ham as they look to break into the top-four this season.

Of course, there are two major hurdles. First, why would he join West Ham? This is where the manager comes into play and whether he can convince him to make a switch.

Secondly, his massive wages. Pique would be an exceptional short-term addition, and the Hammers should at least try to lure him to switch clubs in January.

In other West Ham news, David Moyes has revealed his Europa League ambition ahead of this evening’s game against Rapid Vienna.
