West Ham’s most memorable Premier League wins vs Arsenal: Paulo Di Canio brace and last-gasp Marlon Harewood

West Ham fans have enjoyed some unforgettable moments against this weekend’s opponents Arsenal.

West Ham face Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday, as Nuno Espirito Santo takes charge of his second game since replacing Graham Potter as manager.

Nuno started his tenure in the Irons dugout with a positive result, with West Ham drawing 1-1 with Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday.

West Ham haven’t enjoyed a huge amount of success against Arsenal, but with victories in both of their last two visits to the Gunners’ home, recent form may suggest the tide is changing in this fixture.

Nuno will be hoping to continue the good form in the red half of North London and have Irons fans reliving some memorable wins from back in the day.

Paulo Di Canio at the double in lively affair

Upton Park was host to a Premier League classic in the 1999-2000 season when West Ham triumphed over Arsene Wenger’s heavyweights.

It was vintage Paolo Di Canio as he stole the show, particularly with his sumptuous second goal to seal the win.

The Hammers’ number 10 embarked on a mazy run before bundling the ball over the line for the first after Paulo Wanchope kept the attack alive.

As well as Di Canio’s special brace, the game saw two dimissals, as Arsenal’s Patrick Viera saw red in the 84th minute before Marc Vivien Foe was also sent for an early bath in the 90th minute for West Ham.

Marlon Harewood the last-gasp hero

Substitutions are there to change games, and that’s exactly what Marlon Harewood did at Upton Park on November 5, 2006.

In the 62nd minute, Harewood replaced Bobby Zamora as Hammers manager Alan Pardew rolled the dice.

As the game looked to be heading to a 0-0 stalemate, Matthew Etherington’s determination dragged West Ham up the pitch before a swift one-two with Teddy Sheringham found him some space on the left wing.

Etherington played an inviting ball across the face of Jens Lehmann’s goal and a sliding Harewood accepted and turned home, inciting a roar from the crowd.

There’s not many moments better than a late winner.

West Ham silence the Highbury crowd

Arsenal had won the European Cup Winners’ Cup the in the 1993-94 season while West Ham earned promotion and prepared for their first season in the rebranded Premier League.

Roll on the 1994-95 campaign and West Ham stunned the Highbury faithful with a 2-0 victory, securing an unbeaten first season against Arsenal after a 0-0 draw in the reverse fixture.

It took until Martin Allen’s strike in the 77th minute to break the deadlock before Trevor Morley confirmed the Irons would be leaving with all three points.

Arsenal went on to finish twelfth in the Premier League, their lowest finish since 1976 while West Ham finished just two places below in 14th.
