West Ham United win v Freiburg boosts Tottenham Champions League hopes

Victory for West Ham over Freiburg “makes it a near certainty” that the Premier League will get a fifth Champions League spot, according to prominent journalist Miguel Delaney.

An additional spot for UEFA’s showpiece competition next season will be awarded to the country that sits top of the governing body’s coefficient list at the end of this campaign.

West Ham’s passage through to the quarter-finals of the Europa League has helped to strengthen England’s course, which is ultimately good news for rivals Tottenham.

“This West Ham result makes it a near certainty the Premier League will get five Champions League places,” Independent reporter Delaney posted on X [14 March].

Tottenham and Aston Villa battling for fourth place in Premier League

Tottenham are the side currently in fifth place, so that additional Champions League spot would go down well for our London rivals.

If they were to win their game, it is Aston Villa who are set to be rewarded by the success of West Ham, Liverpool and Co on the continent.

The additional European spot could also come in handy for West Ham if they are to finish in seventh place.

David Moyes has found himself under increasing pressure at West Ham United.

Ultimately, the Irons are focusing solely on winning another European trophy, rather than what it could mean in the long term domestically.

Italy and Germany had a higher coefficient than England heading into the midweek round of fixtures, but that may now be set to change.

After another memorable European night at London Stadium on Thursday (14 March), let’s just hope the Irons are competing on the continent one way or another once again next season.
