West Ham United: UK newspapers react to Jarrod Bowen display in England draw v Belgium

UK media has reacted to Jarrod Bowen as the West Ham ace starred in England’s 2-2 draw with Belgium on Tuesday (26 March).

The Hammers star, who has notched 18 goals and seven assists in all competitions, wheeled away in celebration as he looked to have netted his first-ever England goal, only to be denied by VAR.

Despite ending the match without any goal contributions, Bowen played himself one step closer to Euro 2024 as the Three Lions prepare for the summer tournament in Germany.

Reporting for The Telegraph on Tuesday (26 March) Mike McGrath wrote: “Bright game for the West Ham forward. He took on his marker and got crosses in, then had a header disallowed for offside. Good direct running,” awarding the West Ham man with a 7 out of 10 rating.

The Evening Standard was more lenient with their scoring, allocating Bowen an 8 of out 10 rating. Malik Ouzia wrote: “Gutted to see a first England goal ruled out for offside but this was a big step forward, carrying club form into an England shirt.

“Caused plenty of problems down the right, with running in behind providing a different threat when Toney dropped in.”

Will Jarrod Bowen’s West Ham United form be enough to land a spot on the England plane to Euro 2024?

It would be extremely difficult to believe if Bowen were to be excluded from Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad, firstly impressing during a 23-minute cameo against Brazil before being awarded a start against Belgium.

Despite a very up-and-down season at the London Stadium for West Ham, the 27-year-old winger has been a shining light in David Moyes’ team, alongside the likes of Lucas Paqueta and Mohammed Kudus.

The Three Lions squad is filled to the brim with talent, which will, of course, mean that a couple of players will be left disappointed being left at home in the summer, but Bowen is unlikely to fall into that category.

West Ham star Jarrod Bowen
Jarrod Bowen has been impressive for West Ham this season.

Having been denied his first England goal by VAR against Belgium, he will be eager to right that wrong and there will be no better time to do so than at a major international tournament.

It is only a wonder how the Hammers star has only accumulated seven caps for his nation so far, with Bowen being in fine form for multiple seasons now.

In other West Ham news, Gareth Southgate wanted to select a Hammers teammate of Jarrod Bowen’s for his latest squad.
