West Ham United transfer news as pathway is clear for Pablo Fornals’ January departure

The “path is clear” for West Ham United star Pablo Fornals to depart the London Stadium this January, according to FootballTransfers.com.

The outlet reported on its website on Friday (1 December) that the Irons could be set to “offload” the Spanish midfielder when the window opens, with both Fulham and Sevilla holding an interest in the 27-year-old whose contract expires at the end of the season.

Fornals has found minutes hard to come by in the Premier League this season, instead becoming a regular fixture in the Hammers’ Europa League side, however, the path has now become clear for him to depart West Ham this January.

Time to cash in

There is no doubt that over the course of his time in East London, Fornals has proven to be a good investment for the Hammers, but as he draws to the end of his current contract with seemingly no ambition to extend his stay at the London Stadium it’s the perfect time to cut ties.

David Moyes doesn’t need the Spanish midfielder in the Premier League such is the depth of attacking talent in his ranks after the signing of Mohammed Kudus alongside the likes of Lucas Paqueta, Said Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen.

If Fornals departs at the end of the season, West Ham won’t receive any fee for the 27-year-old. However, should they manage to sell him during the January transfer window, they will pocket some cash for the midfielder, even if it is only a nominal fee.

Although the Irons are clear of the Premier League’s financial fair play restrictions, they remain close to the mark in terms of UEFA’s rules, so it makes sense that Moyes and those above him at the London Stadium take every opportunity to raise much-needed funds.

Should Fornals leave in January, the Irons will have a new gap in their squad for a new signing as well as a bit more money in the transfer pot. Hopefully, that can go towards a deal to finally sign a new number nine.
