West Ham United transfer news as Fabrizio Romano shares update on former Arsenal defender Konstantinos Mavropanos
West Ham are now in talks to secure the services of former Arsenal defender Konstantinos Mavropanos this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The journalist reported on Wednesday (16 August) that the Greece centre-back is keen on returning to the Premier League.
Currently, the 25-year-old is plying his trade at German club Stuttgart with a summer exit on the cards.
Romano wrote on Twitter, “West Ham want Kostas Mavropanos as new centre back after Harry Maguire deal collapsed. Talks on. Mavropanos keen on PL return, deal being discussed.”
Not ideal
Mavropanos was a mistake waiting to happen when he was at Arsenal and it makes little sense for the Hammers to bring him back to the Premier League.
They cannot go from being linked with defenders like Harry Maguire and Jonathan Tah to getting the Greek centre-back to London.
David Moyes surely will have alternatives in mind and it’s going to be quite astonishing if Mavropanos is his top choice.

At 25, he may have improved since he was last in the English top flight but this is still a gamble that West Ham can avoid taking.
There is money to be spent and plenty of options for the Hammers to consider so this is one they should put on the backburner.
If along with him, they’re signing another centre-back, then it’s fine, otherwise it’s one they’ve got to avoid at all costs.
In other West Ham news, the club have now opened advanced talks with a Premier League player who appears to be open on leaving his side this summer.
