West Ham United transfer news as deal agreed with Southampton to sign James Ward-Prowse – Jacob Steinberg

West Ham United have agreed a deal with Southampton to sign James Ward-Prowse, according to The Guardian journalist Jacob Steinberg.

According to Steinberg, taking to his Twitter account (9 August), the Hammers now look set to complete their second midfield signing as they close in on announcing Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez as their first transfer.

Sky Sports reported on Wednesday morning that the Hammers had made a breakthrough in talks for the England international with West Ham growing increasingly confident of a deal of around £30m.

And the Irons have now agreed a fee with Southampton for one of their top midfield targets.

Steinberg tweeted: “Busy morning … West Ham have agreed a deal to sign James Ward-Prowse from Southampton.

“Fee for Ward-Prowse understood to be £30m.”

Excellent business

It now seems as if West Ham United are making serious moves in the market after struggling to agree deals for any of their top targets over the last few weeks.

In a matter of a few days, the Irons have agreed a deal with Ajax to sign Alvarez with an announcement on his transfer now close, they’ve also agreed to a deal to sign Harry Maguire for around £30m and now Ward-Prowse.

West Ham

This is now turning into a brilliant week for the East Londoners as they close in on players who would immediately transform Moyes’ setup and the Scottish manager has certainly now got his wish in signing two top British and experienced internationals.

Ward-Prowse represents excellent business from the Hammers and just the midfield tonic they need after losing Declan Rice. The Saints fan favourite isn’t a direct replacement for his international teammate but immediately comes and presents an upgrade on what they already have.

Excellent technically, a real leader, and a calm and assured presence in the dressing room. Ward-Prowse is certainly the player West Ham United need to improve on last season’s Premier League disappointment.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers identify a “shock” replacement for Aaron Cresswell with a new player stance emerging over a move to East London.
