West Ham United transfer news as AS Roma pushes to sign Gianluca Scamacca, player gives go-ahead for move – Di Marzio

West Ham United could be set to lose Italian striker Gianluca Scamacca this summer with AS Roma stepping up their pursuit to sign him, according to journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Hammers splashed £35m on the Italy international last summer, but he has struggled with fitness issues this season and managed just eight goals in his debut campaign before suffering a season-ending knee injury in April.

Di Marzio reported on 9 June, that the Giallorossi had made contact with West Ham United to sign the forward following the long-term injury blow suffered by Tammy Abraham.

And according to the reputable Italian journalist [12 June], Scamacca has given the green light for a return to his hometown club where he started his career at academy level.

Roma’s bosses will meet with the agents of Scamacca and West Ham United with the beaten Europa League finalists already holding positive talks with Scamacca himself.

Costly error

After the change of his agents and plenty of speculation regarding his future in East London, it’s looking increasingly likely that the former Sassuolo forward will move on this summer and West Ham United may well be resigned to losing him.

It certainly seems like a return to Italy is well on the cards for Scamacca as he’s struggled to acclimatise himself to the English game. However, that shouldn’t determine the West Ham United stance that he’s not good enough to cut it at this level.

West Ham

However, given Scamacca’s capabilities and potential, West Ham United will be foolish to let him go for a cut-price fee or even on loan given they’re potentially about to lose Michail Antonio also.

We feel the Hammers should desperately look to keep the Italian as he still has much to learn and to develop and could well turn out to be a future world-beater if all goes well at the London Stadium.

But, with David Moyes now remaining at the London Stadium next season and Scamacca’s struggles within Moyes’ tactical system, it seems highly likely that a return to Roma is well on the cards for the Italian forward.

Still, should he move, it represents a really costly error by West Ham.
