West Ham United transfer news as £43m bid submitted for ‘fantastic’ Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez
West Ham have made an offer to sign Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez as the club look to make their first summer signing, according to Diario De Morelos.
The Mexican news outlet reported on 24 July that the Hammers have made a bid in the region of £43million to sign the 25-year-old from the Dutch side.
The Mexico international, who his former Ajax teammate Lisandro Martinez once referred to as “fantastic”, has been attracting the interest of a number of clubs during the transfer window, including Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

Moving forward
A deal to bring Alvarez to the London Stadium looks to be edging closer if the report is to be believed, as the Hammers look to find a replacement for Declan Rice.
The midfielder was in the spotlight last summer when Ajax reportedly rejected a bid in the region of £43million from Chelsea for his services.
It will be interesting to see whether they have now softened their stance on allowing the Mexican to leave for that price after De Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij claimed on 17 July that they were looking for about £52million.

Out of all the midfielders West Ham been linked with this summer, though, Alvarez is probably the most ideal replacement for Rice due to him being more of a defensive-minded player that is happy to sit in front of the defence and do the simple parts of the game.
This comes after other bids for the likes of Conor Gallagher and James Ward-Prowse.
It’s now up to the club to move forward with this transfer to ensure no one else comes along and picks him up first.
