West Ham United ‘tracking’ Steven Bergwijn alternative Jack Clarke as January transfer update emerges
West Ham United are “tracking” Jack Clarke as well as Steven Bergwijn during the January transfer window, according to Jacob Steinberg.
The Guardian journalist reported on Monday (8 January) that the Hammers are keen on signing a new left winger before the end of the month and have been keeping tabs on the Sunderland wideman as well as the Ajax and Netherlands forward.
David Moyes’ side had reportedly been interested in the 23-year-old services this month, but his stock has been rapidly rising as a result of his impressive performances under both Tony Mowbray and Michael Beale this season [The Mirror, 6 January].

The Hammers, however, do not have a huge budget to spend over the course of January and any potential incoming will likely hinge on players departing the London Stadium first.
Attractive option
It’s nice to hear that West Ham are tracking potential targets from within the English football pyramid as well as looking abroad as they look to strengthen Moyes’ ranks this month, as they have had great success using this method before.
The Hammers don’t have to look further than Jarrod Bowen to see that there are plenty of talented stars in the Championship ready to make the step into the top flight and Clarke is one of those players more than capable of making the switch.

In 26 appearances in the Championship this season, the 23-year-old has managed to score 12 goals and pick up two assists, already beating his tally of 11 strikes last season. He is one of the Championship’s best prospects and would be an excellent addition to Moyes’ side.
Bergwijn may have more experience in the Premier League and at a top level, but Clarke could be a much more exciting addition. It will be interesting to see which target West Ham pursue this month, should they find the cash to strengthen.
