West Ham United target Ivan Toney set for contract extension at Brentford

West Ham United transfer target Ivan Toney is set to be offered a new deal at Brentford after an impressive start to the 2022/23 season according to The Mirror.

It’s understood that Brentford want to offer him an improved weekly wage which is just north of six figures in order to keep him happy in West London.

The Mirror also suggest (10 October) that the improved deal would include a “hefty” release clause for the 26-year-old who has caught the attention of West Ham, Newcastle, Manchester United and Leeds in recent months.

Not needed

It’s clear to see why Brentford are looking to offer the 26-year-old a new and improved deal, particularly after the interest in him over the summer.

The Sunday Express reported (Page 67, 17 July) that the four clubs were also vying for his signature in the summer. This is a move that seems rather unlikely for West Ham considering the striking options that David Moyes has at his disposal now and with Toney signing a new deal.

Gianluca Scamacca has started to fire on all cylinders and looks like a player with a much higher ceiling than Toney does. Scamacca will only go from strength to strength the more games he plays for the Hammers.

Potentially a fox-in-the-box style of striker could be something for Moyes to target in the January window with Toney being far too similar to Scamacca and Michai Antonio in his style of play.

However, it’s still refreshing to see West Ham being linked with some of the most highly rated and in-demand players in the Premier League.
