West Ham United: Sky Sports journalist shares what he knows about Steven Bergwijn transfer link

West Ham are not seriously considering a move for Steven Bergwijn during the January transfer window, according to Florian Plettenberg.

The Sky Sports journalist took to X to report [7 January] that, while the Dutchman is no longer an option for the Hammers, the club have other players on their transfer list.

Bergwijn joined Ajax from Tottenham Hotspur in July 2022, going on to make 65 appearances for the Eredivisie side, registering 24 goals and nine assists.

Better players on the market

Bergwijn is a decent player, there is no doubt about that. Football fans everywhere remember his Tottenham brace against Leicester City, scoring an equaliser in the 90+5′ minute and a winner in the 90+7′ minute.

However, with only eight goals in 83 appearances for Spurs, the 26-year-old never settled in England and departed for the Netherlands in a hurry. And the player seems to be at home in the Dutch league.

Even despite Ajax’s history-breaking poor start to the season, Bergwijn has scored eight goals and has led by example as captain during an extremely tough situation, with the former Eredivisie champions back up to fifth place in the league.

Although he does fit the attacking profile for West Ham, with the pace and agility likening to that of Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus, just not to the same level or quality.

With Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals likely to depart London Stadium, Bergwijn is a decent choice to refill one of the gaps left by the duo. But if the Hammers have a list of potential transfers lined up, it may be a smart decision to loan the Dutch winger to the club, especially if Lucas Paqueta is to suffer any other injuries or leaves London altogether.

In other West Ham news, one player wants to leave the Hammers amid a £30million development.
