West Ham United: Pundit believes Issa Diop should leave London Stadium after falling out of favour

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie believes 25-year-old defender Issa Diop should leave the club this summer after falling dramatically down the pecking order at West Ham.

According to West Ham club website Claret & Hugh [20 June], Ligue 1 duo, Monaco and Lyon are battling for the Frenchmen’s signature.

Diop has a year left on his current deal at the London Stadium with the club holding an option for an extra year, however, McAvennie believes it’s time for the defender to depart.

“I think he’s done alright the boy, but West Ham have three or four good ones in that position so Diop can go,” he told West Ham Zone.

“If they bring a player in and Diop goes then that will be four they’ve got.

“I would let Diop go if he wants to depart the club.

“He might want to go because he’ll look at the situation and think he won’t get any game time because these boys are playing well.

“If he wants to go and play I don’t have a problem with that, I really don’t.

“He’s fought for his place and was fighting for his place for all of last year.

“He knows he’s not number one choice for centre-half, so he might wanna go and play elsewhere.”

The Irons have added to their defensive options with the signing of Rennes Moroccan defender Nayef Aguerd, which is likely to push Diop even further down the pecking order.

The 25-year-old has been a victim of some good form from Kurt Zouma and, in particular, Craig Dawson this season.

A move back to his native France could make sense for Diop.
