Paul Merson reacts to West Ham United sack news on David Moyes
Paul Merson reckons it would be an absolute joke if West Ham United chose to sack David Moyes if the club lose to Everton on 21 January.
Unfortunately, in the harsh and cruel modern game of football that is the exact position Moyes finds himself in heading into a crucial weekend of Premier League fixtures.
Merson confessed that sacking Moyes could lead the Hammers to relegation and admitted if anyone is going to help them beat the drop, it’s Moyes himself.
“If West Ham lose against Everton today and Moyes gets the sack, which would be an absolute joke, I can see the Hammers getting relegated,” said Merson in the Daily Star [Jan 21, pg. 44].
“With West Ham, I really think it’s sack Moyes at your peril.”

Moyes can leave the London Stadium with his head held high, should he be sacked from the club after a loss to Everton on 21 January.
He’s taken the Hammers to new heights, European adventures and some memorable results along the way and for that alone, he deserves a lot of credit.
The Scot made West Ham United a team to be reckoned with once again in the Premier League, a place where juggernauts in the league would hate to come and play.
It’s easy to forget in the English top tier just how good a manager has been for you and this season has seemed to make many Hammers do just that.
Which is fair enough in some respects, results and performances on the pitch certainly haven’t been good enough but that is partly down to players not performing.
Summer signings getting injured and not living up to the hype haven’t helped matters either for Moyes and there has been a string of reasons as to why things haven’t gone to plan so far this campaign.
With luck, he can turn this one around, but unfortunately, it seems like the writing has been on the wall for quite some time now.
