West Ham United on verge of signing Croatian defender Borna Sosa

West Ham United are closing in on signing Stuttgart’s Croatian left-back Borna Sosa, according to Croatian media outlet Index.

The 24-year-old, who has six caps for his national side, had been linked with a move to the Irons’ opening day defeaters Manchester City but they have now been usurped by the Hammers.

Sosa’s representatives have been in England for two days trying to complete a deal which would see West Ham pay £16.9million to the Bundesliga side before the window closes.

There are still other sides in the race to sign the Croatian which could scupper David Moyes’ chances as Newcastle United eye a move and City aren’t out of the race yet either.

The West Ham manager is keen to add a left-back to his squad before the transfer window closes with only Aaron Cresswell a natural on that side at the club right now.

Steal

Sosa proved to be one of Europe’s most surprising packages last season as he took to the Bundesliga like a duck to water, playing 30 times across all competitions and scoring twice.

His attacking returns may not be out of this world in terms of direct goals but he did record his fair share of assists while looking extremely capable in defence against some very lively wingers in Germany.

All of that is available for just £16.9million and with this being one of West Ham United’s most important purchases of the summer, it would be a foolish mistake not to do everything in their power to complete a transfer.

Cresswell could still get the nod at left-back if Sosa arrives but having that player to rival the 32-year-old while also providing cover will be a huge weight off the shoulders of Moyes.

And if they can beat the Magpies and City to a deal, then that just adds an extra sprinkling of spice to the move.
