West Ham United on red alert to complete ‘shock’ Callum Wilson as Newcastle United make late January transfer decision

West Ham are now on “red alert” over a possible deal to sign Callum Wilson before the close of the January transfer window, according to The Sun.

The paper reported via their website late on 25 January that Newcastle are ready to sell the 31-year-old for a “cut-price” £18million fee, opening the door to a “shock” deal.

Chelsea and Manchester United are both named as looking to add a forward, while AC Milan are also in the frame and Atletico Madrid have had a bid rejected this month.

Newcastle reportedly “must sell” before they can buy anyone during the window, opening the door for Michail Antonio’s BBC podcast partner to join him at the London Stadium.

The answer?

West Ham have had their fair share of struggles up front in recent years, with Antonio converted to a striker from a right-back yet able to hold off all attempts to provide top tier alternatives.

Big money moves for Sebastien Haller and Gianluca Scamacca flopped and saw both sold back to Europe at a loss, while low-key arrivals such as Danny Ings also haven’t taken off.

Wilson clearly won’t be much more of a long-term answer than Antonio, as he is due to turn 32 next month, but his scoring form has been strong across recent seasons in the Premier League.

With seven top flight goals so far, on top of 18 last term, the former Bournemouth striker is arguably getting better with age, and David Moyes does tend to like veterans who have plenty of experience in the division.

But whether the asking price is seen as too much to spend on a player who may only spend a couple of years at the London Stadium remains to be seen.

In the short term it could be a great move to secure a European finish this season, but how long he can maintain his current form will be the big question.

In other West Ham news, another goalscoring option is desperate for the Hammers to come in with a bid to sort out his future now.
