West Ham United: Phil Hay reacts to Kalvin Phillips footage amid fresh Leeds transfer news

Phil Hay says it is “quite hard to watch” what Kalvin Phillips is going through at West Ham amid links with a return to Leeds United.

Phillips was filmed putting his middle finger up at a West Ham fan who was giving him abuse after West Ham’s 4-3 loss to Newcastle United on Saturday (30 March).

Hours after that incident, The Sunday Mirror reported [31 March] that Leeds will attempt to re-sign the midfielder if they return to the Premier League.

Commenting on the video of the West Ham fan incident, The Athletic reporter Hay said via X [30 March]: “Having seen how happy Phillips was in himself at Leeds, this is quite hard to watch.”

Leeds United interested in re-signing Kalvin Phillips

Phillips has undoubtedly struggled pretty much from the moment he first put on a West Ham United shirt.

Many expected the England international to make a big impact at London Stadium, and he has done exactly that – just for the wrong reasons.

The 28-year-old’s lack of playing time over the previous 18 months is now catching up with him and he is shorn of all confidence.

Phillips was involved in another contentious moment in the loss to Newcastle when giving away a penalty at a pivotal moment.

That said, he did not deserve to be targeted by supporters after the game. Phillips should equally not have reacted the way he did.

This is clearly not a marriage made in heaven, and it may well be that he now ends up back at Leeds in the next five months or so.

If not, Manchester City will struggle to find any other permanent home for him at this rate.
