James Ward-Prowse shares ‘disappointed’ verdict after West Ham United win v Sheffield United

James Ward-Prowse admits he was “a little bit disappointed” West Ham were unable to win by a bigger margin against Sheffield United.

The Irons eased to victory over the division’s bottom side on Saturday [30 September] thanks to first-half goals from Jarrod Bowen and Tomas Soucek.

The Hammers had nine shots on target at London Stadium, two of those via Ward-Prowse, but had to settle for just a couple of goals.

While happy to have returned to winning ways in the Premier League, summer signing Ward-Prowse would have liked his side to have scored more times.

“We’re really pleased with the performance,” he told the club’s official website [2 September].

“It was a tough game on Saturday – every game in the Premier League is tough – but especially coming up against a team who had a difficult week last week.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game, but the two early goals helped us and I think we’re a little bit disappointed that we couldn’t build on that [with more goals] in the second half.”

A good thing

Ward-Prowse was once again West Ham’s biggest attacking threat as he registered a game-high six key passes [WhoScored], though none of those were an assist.

That was down to some wayward finishing from West Ham and some good saves from opposition goalkeeper Wes Foderingham.

In fairness, the game was over as a contest with around 37 minutes played when Soucek added to Bowen’s opener.

The fact JWP is not entirely pleased can only be considered a positive, as it shows the players are striving for perfection.

This was a routine win for the Hammers and they finally have some momentum again thanks to back-to-back wins in all competitions.

If Ward-Prowse and his colleagues keep this up, there is no reason why United cannot challenge for those European spots this season.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers could be without a key player for their Europa League clash against Freiburg.
