West Ham United news: English media stunned by Declan Rice in England win v Ukraine
Declan Rice has once again been lauded by the national media after the West Ham captain was instrumental in England’s 2-0 win over Ukraine.
Goals from Bukayo Saka and Harry Kane saw Gareth Southgate’s side make it back-to-back wins to start their European qualifying campaign.
Rice was once again given a starting role by the England boss and has been praised for a “brilliant” display at the heart of the midfield.

“Impeccably-timed intervention early in the second half, to stop Ukraine attack, the pick of his tireless work,” wrote the Daily Mail (26 March).
The Mirror added (26 March): “Brilliant shield for the defence, tackled and passed brilliantly.”
World-class
Rice’s work used to go somewhat unnoticed, but now the West Ham skipper is gaining the recognition he deserves. Without him at the heart of England’s midfield, Southgate’s side would almost certainly give away a higher number of chances.
His latest displays against Italy and Ukraine are yet more evidence to suggest the 24-year-old is destined to be playing at one of Europe’s best clubs and competing for the Champions League. He’s played in the latter stages of major international tournaments and will be eager to test himself at the pinnacle of club football.

Sky Sports journalist, Florian Plettenberg, has revealed (via Twitter, 16 March) Rice is still “definitely” a target for Chelsea as Todd Boehly’s revolution in West London shows no sign of slowing down. Arsenal have also been linked, but, due to the immense back at Stamford Bridge, a move across the capital looks more likely.
Let’s hope the Hammers get somewhere near his valuation if and when he does depart the London Stadium.
