West Ham United news as Richard Keys explodes over latest controversy in Premier League

Richard Keys has slammed VAR after West Ham United weren’t awarded a penalty against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

Victor Lindelöf appeared to handle a Said Benrahma cross during the Hammers’ 1-0 win at the London Stadium, however, no penalty was awarded.

Keys has since reacted to the incident and brandished the decision as an “embarrassment” after the Red Devils escaped punishment.

“So we can all look forward to a new show where referees explain decisions taken by VAR? Expect ground-breaking tv we’re told,” wrote Keys (his personal blog, 8 May).

“Anything that takes us nearer real-time audio at the monitor being shared by fans is a step in the right direction, but I’m not getting too excited.

“Unless we get to that stage where we can listen to the ref and Stockley Park ‘live’ then not a lot will change – especially when VAR operators can’t spot a handball offence.

“Lindelof at West Ham? Nailed on. He might as well have caught the ball. The matchday centres excuses to us were embarrassing.”

Outrageous

It was an outrageous moment from the VAR official. Why on earth were the Hammers not awarded a spot-kick? Lindelof’s arm was in an extremely unnatural position. West Ham will probably get an apology, and, on this occasion, they will accept it and move on.

But, had the Hammers drawn or lost, there would’ve been a serious inquest, and not for the first time in the 2022/23 season. Something has to be done over the summer. The inconsistency is what infuriates clubs at present. There needs to be clear guidelines as to what constitutes handball and what doesn’t.

Nonetheless, David Moyes will be delighted with his side’s performance on Sunday. They dealt with long periods of pressure and made the most of the attacking chances they were given. The result will almost certainly guarantee West Ham’s Premier League status. If the Hammers can win the Conference League, the 2022/23 season will actually be fondly remembered.
