West Ham United mocked over ‘weird’ announcement, Arsenal mentioned
Andrew Dillon has mocked West Ham United after the club unveiled their away kit for the 2024/25 campaign.
The Hammers launched their away strip, which they have labelled “The Cockney Kit”, via their official website on Monday 8 July.
And Dillon, writing via The Sun (page 12 of pull-out, 12 July), has poked fun at the club.
Dillon wrote, “To most people it looks like a regular black shirt, but, apparently, it’s inspired by East End tradition.
“It includes woven-in images of the iconic St Mary-le-Bow Chruch. Folklore dictates only those born within earshot of the church’s bells can claim to be true Cock-er-nees.
“Which is weird because North London’s Arsenal are a mile closer to Bow bells than West Ham.
“Throw in most of the Hammers fanbase has now emigrated from East London to the A13 corridor and you can only assume that they must have bloody good hearing.”
West Ham United try to stick to their roots with away kit release for 2024/25
Plenty of West Ham supporters will always feel as though their hearts are in East London.
That is where many generations of the club’s fans grew up, and despite their move to West London and the London Stadium, they’re likely to still feel as though they’re an East London club.
Therefore, it is difficult to blame the Hammers for trying to bring back a bit of those roots with this latest kit release.
However, they are no longer based in the East of London, and it might therefore be time for the club and their supporters to embrace their new surroundings.
There will be plenty of debate and mixed opinions about whether or not the move to the London Stadium was the right decision.
On the one hand, it has helped the club grow commercially and arguably allowed them to compete higher up the table and in Europe in recent years.

However, it will be difficult to ever beat the atmosphere of the iconic Boleyn Ground.
